as a matter of fact I just read something about the provenance of it and
Twain is one of a couple people considered as possibly the first to
popularize the saying. there are a couple others contenders tho and the
form I've chosen is more along the lines of an old folk-saying. Like
many such, the forms evolve over generations i) making it hard to trace
back and ii) raising one or two of the forms to be the (currently)
'commonly-accepted' form
all of which is irrelevant as I am laying no claim to originating the
quote or even quoting for that manner - I am merely postulating a
maxim (in the manner of Murphy's Law, the Peter Principle, or the
Exception Rule : All rules have an exception...except this one.)
