Thanks, Roger, when I feel a bit better I'll try again with your info.

The install that went well on my second computer was 8.5, as I happened to
have the file on a stick, but the version on my main box is 8.53.

When I try to replacw the mail and profile folders in 8.5, it was fine, but
8.53 put mail as a subfolder of mail, and the same for profile.
If I deleted mail, and profile first, the prog recreated them and still put
in mail and profiles as subfolders!
I don't know if I could have managed it in DOS, as th easy answer seemed to
be to delete 8.53, install 8.5, and it's fine now.

I'm happy I posted, if only because I often feel I'm the only brainless
muppet this sort of thing ever happens to.

I really like opera, and it's email client, (I don't know about the
newsreader, you couldn't get Xnews off me with surgery), but even with your
advice, I'm dreading trying 9 again.

I did try to install 9 into a new folder, and leave 8 in the original
place, but something went wrong with that, too :-(
