I like Media Player Classic as a general purpose media player. However,
by far the best solution I've found for playing DVDs on my computer is
Sigma Designs' program DVD Station, which can be downloaded at their
site, http://www.sigmadesigns.com, in the "Support" section.

This program is indeed freeware. The catch? You need to install their
MPEG decoder card, which can be purchased at minimal cost on eBay.
Because of this caveat, I've been taken to task in this newsgroup
before for recommending this solution. Nonetheless, I stand by my
recommendation. It ran great on my old Celeron-powered machne with
(barely adequate) onboard video - and even on my current, much more
powerful computer, I still prefer it to programs like MPC that rely on
sofware MPEG decoding for playing DVDs.
