Have you considered investing in one of the growing number of free
newsreading clients that offer effective filtering instead of continuing with
that broke-dick Agent v3 that you're using ;-)? Xnews and 40tude's Dialog come
to mind, although, strictly speaking neither is a proper off-line reader.
Alternatively, since your money's spent, get this (free):
http://www.nfilter.org/ and make sure the following statement is in your filter
file:
* Drop xref:[^:]*:[^:]*:[^:]*:.*
In *all* subscribed groups it drops crossposts to three-or-more groups.
Works *wonders*. Additionally, you may find the following statements to be
useful, although, you may wish to make them global:
misc.consumers.frugal-living Drop Xref:*soc.support.fat-acceptance*
misc.consumers.frugal-living Drop Xref:*alt.collecting.8-track-tapes*
These two drop any posts also crossposted to either of the two target
groups -- they seem to be primary sources of crossposted sewage;
misc.consumers.frugal-living Flag:googlegroups Message-ID: *googlegroups.com*
This flags the submect lines of postings from googlegroups assholes,
causing a properly-configured (but still broke-dick) Agent to remove them from
existing threads and place them elsewhere in the list of retrieved headers. Not
surprisingly, googlegroups has become the refuge of many AOL dweebs since AOL
killed off its newsreading service and, IMO, most often is best ignored.
Warning: The nfilter self-installer may produce an error message in Win2000
or better. If it does, the easiest fix is to download the zip archive and simply
paste its contents where you want them. Alternatively, you may create a
single-byte file, append it to the self-extracting distribution file and all
will be well.
Ironically, some of the best documatation that I've found of the so-called
"regular expressions" used by nfilter (AKA newsproxy) is in Agent's help file.
...go figure.
