I found the problem while Googling (should have tried that first, eh?)

When I cloned the system, I told XXCLONE that it was drive D. Of course,
at that time it was, but it would become drive C when I rebooted the
system.

The solution is to use a Win9x boot disk, and FDISK/MBR. Of course, I
could have recloned the drive and set the drive as C, but it would have
taken much longer that way.
