lost link ability in Xnews and Screamer radio

i used to be able to double-click on a link posted in this ng using Xnews
and in my email (thunderbird, and Screamer radio and go dirctly to the web
pages. i am running win xp sp1. I suspect the same is true in application
like Cryptedit also.
in Screamer i click on the link on the player and Windows Explorer opens.
in Xnews and Thunderbird nothing happens.
i tweak too much at times and it is surely my fault. does anybody know how
to fix this?
