I don't know much about Macs, but I had undesirable results
using software play through on a Windows box, basically it over dubs the
sound to what is being recorded(I get an echo effect). If you have mixer
capabilities in your OS
then maybe set Audacity to mixer as I have done, then a good starting point
is to set your input volume level to 2.0 and the output level to 0.4. This
usually works fairly well for me.
