IIRC Sony players support both mp3 and the ATRAC formats. It shouldn't
be necessary to install the software that came with it. You should be
able to drag and drop your mp3 files onto your player, and then have it
play them.
ATRAC IIRC is a proprietary compression format owned by Sony. It's major
function is to compress your music to a much smaller size than what the
mp3 format can do. I believe that you may have to have the software
installed only if you plan on purchasing music from the Sony Music
Store. However you are free to purchase music from any site that sells
mp3s.
