I have read (here and elsewhere) that the BBC contracted with Real
Networks to provide a special, spyware- and adware-free version of
Real Player 8 (an older version) for their listeners. If you want to
test that claim:

Another program that has been claimed to play .smil is JetAudio Basic.

Linux users can use Helix (the RealPlayer core code), but that's not a
viable option for MS-Windows users.
