Something other/'better' than NewsProxy? (was: Stopping Sporge tutorial using NewsProxy (where do we get nfilter.dat)?)

If NewsProxy is indeed *that* limited, then some of the users may want
to look at alternatives, especially if their main concern is filtering,
but they don't have major 'bandwidth' limitations.

For example, as I said before, Hamster [1] can filter on *any* header
- independent of server-support - and on any body content. However in
order to be able to do that, Hamster will *download* any articles which
were not filtered by the XOVER data ('overview.fmt') and then filter
those articles before passing them on to the newsreader. (Of course it
will not *store* any filtered articles.) So Hamster will only save
little *bandwidth*, but will provide advanced filtering capability.

However Hamster is not *just* a filter, it is also a local News server
which means that you read 'offline'/semi-online. If you can't stand such
a mode, then Hamster is not for you, and you get what you deserve! :-)

I hope this helps.

Perhaps others can point to other alternatives (for MS-Windows), if
any.
